Types
There are various genres/types of Indian soap operas broadcast-ed in India, the major being drama series. Following are different genres which are broadcast as soap operas in India.
Drama series
The trend of daily long running drama series started with Ekta Kapoor's soap opera, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi which was followed by several K-series such as Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Kohi Apna Sa, Kkusum and more. Most recent successful drama series are Saath Nibhaana Saathiya, Sasural Simar Ka and Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai all former three completing 2000 episodes.
Romance series
Romance series began to air in early 2000s with the drama series. Initially Kasautii Zindagii Kay was a romance series but to add the flavour of Indian soap opera, it was drama cum romance series. Several shows were followed with it some of them being, Kutumb, Kahiin to Hoga, Kayamath and so on. Most recent being Ye Hai Mohabbatein, Kumkum Bhagya, Kasam Tere Pyaar Ki and Kundali Bhagya.
Series with Social Message
Indian soap operas mainly focus on day to day drama but several soaps in recent times do focused on socially relevant themes such as Child marriages. female child killings, rape, murder sati and several themes that sends message to society. The most popular soap under this genre is Balika Vadhu that focused on Child Marriages, Na Aana Is Des Laado that focused on social evils against girl child and women's rights, Bairi Piya a soap by Balaji Telefilms that showcased how poor farmer's sold their daughters to landlords when they were unable to pay their loans, Bandini a show that described how a female was married under forced circumstances. The most recent being Shakti - Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki which focuses on transgenders and their social rights.
Historical series
Several soap operas in India are produced on historical figures and facts. Most of them being on Indian kings and queens. The most popular soap opera in this genre is Zee TV's Jodha Akbar, a romantic tale of Mughal king Akbar and Rajput princess Jodha, created and produced by Ekta Kapoor under her banner Balaji Telefilms and Jhansi Ki Rani, a story of brave queen and Indian prominent independence figure Rani Laxmibai. Others include, Veer Shivaji, a story of Maratha king Shivaji, Bharat Ka Veer Putra – Maharana Pratap, a story of Rajput king, Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat a story of Maurayan king Ashoka. Most recent being, Porus and Prithvi Vallabh - Itihaas Bhi, Rahasya Bhi.
The Indian mythological drama series are produced on Indian Hindu mythology and gods. The first mythological series in India was produced in 1986. The most popular series in this genre ever produced are ,Ramayan and Mahabharat. Since than several versions of this series are reproduced the most recent being, Mahabharat and Siya Ke Ram on Star Plus. Other series made in this genre are Dharmakshetra, Jai Shri Krishna, Kahaani Hamaaray Mahaabhaarat Ki, Mahakaali — Anth Hi Aarambh Hai, Sankatmochan Mahabali Hanuman, Suryaputra Karn, Vighnaharta Ganesha and several others.
The comedy series in India were initially made with new stories in every episodes. Later, the comedy series too adopted soap opera and like several drama series, the comedy series in India too ran for years and years for thousands of episodes. The most popular series with the most no. of episodes in this genre is, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah which has completed 2500 episodes and still running. Also a channel SAB TV from Sony Pictures Networks India showcases only Comedy series.
Horror/Thriller series
Horror series were initially made on episodic stories like comedy series. Later on this series also like drama series were made in Indian soap opera style. Some of them include Mano Ya Na Mano, Kya Hadsaa Kya Haqeeqat, Fear Files: Darr Ki Sacchi Tasvirein, Ek Deewaana Tha, Ek Thhi Naayka, Ssshhhh...Koi Hai and several others.
